Heel Pain in the Foot


Heel pain in the foot is a frequent complaint among those people who stand for long hours at work or are involved in strenuous sport activities. This condition may occur in people of all ages, however, people over 50 have a 50% chance of developing heel pain in the foot. The cause of heel pain varies from person to person, but the symptoms are much the same for everyone.

Symptoms and causes of heel pain

Heel pain in the foot is at its most intense during the morning hours or after sitting for a while. When rising a sharp stabbing pain is felt in the centre of the heel which often subsides with walking and becomes more like a dull ache. Other warning signals of heel pain may include swelling around the heel area of the foot.

There are several causes of heel pain in the foot. The first cause is repetitive stress which results in sore feet and adversely affects a specific area. In the second place, heel pain is caused by plantar fasciitis when plantar fascia, a tissue, running from the heel bone to the toes gets excessively inflamed.

What is Plantar Fasciitis?

When plantar fascia, a thick band of tissue along the sole, gets inflamed and swollen due to heel injury or disproportionate stretching, it becomes a cause of irritation and results in excessive heel pain. The foot’s faulty structure is also a common reason of plantar fasciitis. People who either have flat feet or arched feet are more prone to developing such condition. (Read more..)

Heel spur refers to abnormal growth on the calcaneus bone (heel bone) and leads to intense pain at the bottom and front of the calcaneus bone. The pain usually subsides after sometime and comes back when one begins to walk after long hours of sitting down. However, one major cause of heel spur is excessive pressure of body weight on the heel. Some common symptoms of heel spur include heel pain, an irritating heel and discomfort in standing and walking. Treatment options for heel pain in the foot

All medical conditions like heel pain, heel spur and plantar fasciitis can be treated without the need for invasive, expensive surgical procedures. It may also depend on the severity of the condition. However, to treat intense heel pain, you must initially avoid any sort of tension or straining in the affected area. Physically demanding activities like running, exercising and jogging must be avoided, even long walks. Apply ice packs on the affected area of the heel and take sufficient amounts of rest. You can do some stretching exercises daily to improve the condition of your foot. Walking barefoot especially on hard floors and tiles is a big no and supportive footwear should be worn at all times! Try and get relief with orthotic insoles and night splints which help in reducing and gradually eradicating the heel pain. (Read more..)

Stiffness and tightness of the calf muscles can be overcome by wearing a night splint.
